![]() ![]() Just last week, horror director Mike Flanagan ( Doctor Sleep, The Haunting of Hill House) surprised industry insiders by leaving Netflix for Amazon, and we already know one of the big projects Flanagan and Amazon have planned: it’s The Dark Tower. What did finally emerge out of all of that effort was the 2017 film The Dark Tower (Rotten at 15%), starring Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba, but that film’s disappointing box office stalled any plans for sequels or TV spinoffs. Some of the remaining fan favorites that haven’t been fully adapted yet are the various books that comprise The Dark Tower series, but various filmmakers have been trying to get something going since at least 2007. More than any other modern novelist, the works of Stephen King have been adapted into dozens of movies, and at any given time, there are several in different stages of development. Read The Tower of London: A Historical Romance (Illustrated) by William Harrison Ainsworth available from Rakuten Kobo. Ainsworth was a product of the declining era of Romanticism, and of the Romantic tendency to long for an escape from modern reality paradoxically, he happily accepted a concept of social progress and was both amused and shocked by the narrowness of his ancestors’ world. On the one hand, he was content to be a Victorian Englishman and to have escaped the plagues, racks and bigotry of the past on the other, he was drawn to history in search of an imaginative release from the drabness and relative stability of life in the nineteenth century. His novels catered for a taste for easily assimilated historical romance, even though, like his audience, Ainsworth held an equivocal view of the relevance of the study of history. He was a best-seller in an age which enjoyed the benefits of industrialism for the production and distribution of literature, but which nevertheless affected a sentimental attachment to a time and place without machines. Ainsworth wrote quickly and spiritedly, and, for the first decade of his literary career at least, he maintained a phenomenal and often inexplicable success. William Harrison Ainsworth had a deep and romantic attraction to the England of the Tudors and Stuarts, and he wrote popular books about the period for an audience which shared his passion. ![]() ![]() Now, Kit’s counting on his countess to make his wildest dreams a reality and he plans to convince her, one pleasurable seduction at a time.
